Crossed-Out Names on the Form
Ilhan Omar’s 2009 marriage application is drawing fresh attention because of a series of crossed-out entries. The application, obtained by the New York Post from Hennepin County, Minnesota, appears to show Omar first writing “Omar” as her last name in the section labeled “COMPLETE NAMES OF PARTIES AFTER MARRIAGE.” She then crossed it out, wrote “Elmi,” crossed that out as well, and returned to “Omar.” The form does not settle the broader identity dispute by itself, but the repeated changes are now part of the public controversy surrounding Omar’s marriage and immigration history.
The Identity Dispute Grows
A recent Justice Department court filing identifies Omar as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” The report says this was the first time the federal government publicly used that name in a filing. It also relays allegations from sources familiar with the investigation that “Ilhan Omar” was used as an alias by Ilhan Nur Said Elmi to obtain citizenship in 2000, live in the country illegally, and run for office. Those claims remain allegations. A former Minnesota federal immigration judge reportedly said the issue could call into question documents completed under the name Ilhan Omar. The application also lists Ahmed Nur Said Elmi and states that neither party was related to the other by blood or adoption. That declaration is central to the controversy because the report describes Elmi as Omar’s brother, creating a conflict between the form and the allegations about their relationship.
Justice Department Says Probe Continues
The federal government is still investigating Nur Said Elmi, also identified as Omar, in a criminal fraud probe focused on immigration and potentially financial matters. In its recent filing, the Justice Department said the investigation is “ongoing” and that “no charging decision has been made.” The department also urged a federal judge to keep a search warrant under seal and said the warrant had not been “fully executed.” Those details show that the matter remains under investigation, not that a criminal conviction has occurred. Until prosecutors announce a decision, the allegations and the government’s court filings must be separated from final findings of fact.
Trump Turns Dispute Into Campaign Issue
Trump has highlighted the allegations during recent midterm campaign rallies, according to the report, and called on Omar to “immediately resign from Congress.” The marriage application adds another document to a controversy already being examined by political opponents, while the Justice Department investigation remains active. For now, the crossed-out names, the conflicting relationship claims, and the unresolved investigation remain at the center of the political fight.
