A Narrow Upset in Guilford County
Democrat Shelly Headen pulled off a narrow upset in North Carolina House District 62, defeating Republican incumbent John Blust by 233 votes on Tuesday, according to the reported results. Republicans had held the Guilford County seat for more than two decades. The margin falls within North Carolina’s 1% recount threshold for non-statewide contests, and Blust can request a recount once county results are certified on Nov. 13. At that margin, a reversal appears extremely unlikely.
The Facebook Post From Dachau
In September, Headen shared a Facebook story from a visit to the Dachau concentration camp memorial in Germany. The post included an image showing her in front of ovens and stated, “Visiting Dauchau [sic] Concentration Camp in Germany… This is where Trump supporters belong.” The memorial states that Nazis murdered 41,500 Jewish people at the site. In another post, Headen wrote, “I think our only hope is an attack on US Soil … preferably Alabama, Louisiana … where the stupid people live.”
Her Own Party Cut Ties
The North Carolina House Democratic Caucus condemned the posts and announced that it would no longer support Headen’s candidacy. Headen had described herself on Facebook as a CPA and business owner running to “restore human decency,” making the contrast especially stark. Still, the caucus’s condemnation did not prevent her from winning. The result does not establish whether voters knew about the posts, rejected their importance, or voted for her despite them.
Other Allegations Mentioned in the Race
Breitbart previously reported that two apparent 2024 law-enforcement “incident/investigation reports” reportedly identified Headen as the suspect in incidents involving her husband. Those reports concern allegations, not a conviction, and should not be treated as proof beyond what the records establish. Even with the caucus withdrawing its support and the controversy surrounding her Facebook posts, Headen won the district by 233 votes. Blust may request a recount after certification.
