After former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) formally announced her retirement, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) showered her with praise in yet another massive reversal.
Pelosi, 85, formally announced that she will not be seeking re-election on Thursday after suggesting she would do so earlier this week. The former House speaker had recently drawn two formidable primary challengers and was reportedly less than confident she could outlast both of them in a protracted primary fight.
While speaking with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown on “The Situation Room,” Greene issued a reaction to the news not long after it was announced. “My reaction is that I believe in term limits. I co-sponsored that bill, and it’s been decades now that I believe we have seen a failure in Washington, D.C.,” she said.
“However, I will praise Nancy Pelosi. She had an incredible career for her party. I served under her during her speakership in Congress. I was very impressed in her ability to get things done,” the congresswoman added. “I wish we could get things done for our party like Nancy Pelosi did her for party. I wish her well in her retirement. But I would like to see people exit Washington a lot sooner instead of well into their 80s.”
The remark represents yet another wild shift for MTG, who has become a frequent guest on left-wing media circuits in recent weeks.
Prior to running for Congress, the Georgia Republican circulated a petition to impeach Pelosi for “crimes of treason,” framing it as a response to Pelosi’s alleged failure to uphold immigration laws. Greene doubled down on calls for a “treason” trial while filming a video outside Pelosi’s office just a month later.
“She’s a traitor to our country, she’s guilty of treason,” Greene said. “She took an oath to protect American citizens and uphold our laws. And she gives aid and comfort to our enemies who illegally invade our land. That’s what treason is,” she added, repeatedly noting that treason is punishable by death.
These remarks contributed to MTG’s 2021 House censure resolution (H. Res. 83), which cited her calls for Pelosi’s execution and liking violent comments as grounds for condemnation. During a 2022 court hearing challenging her eligibility to run for office, Greene testified under oath that she did not recall making or endorsing many of these statements.
