The arrest, which would be considered a win for public safety in any rational jurisdiction, has instead triggered panic among Providence’s Democrat leadership. Smiley called the incident “complex” and insisted that the city’s police department must reassure residents they “will not cooperate or serve as immigration agents.” Apparently, in the eyes of progressive politicians, removing a violent drug trafficker from the community is a bad thing—unless, of course, it’s done without any coordination with ICE, the agency tasked with enforcing immigration laws.

Even more outrageous, a Rhode Island Democrat lawmaker went full hyperbole, comparing ICE to the Gestapo—a disgusting and historically illiterate smear against officers who risk their lives to combat drug cartels and transnational gangs. “Preliminarily, we believe that policy was followed… Providence police acted in accordance with our existing policy.”
“It certainly was jarring video that I saw.”
