In a surprising move, former President Trump announced that he will release all of the remaining classified files related to the assassination of John F. Kennedy if he is re-elected president in 2024. Trump made this pledge in an interview with the Messenger, a conservative news outlet, on May 15, 2023.
Trump said he had already released a lot of JFK files during his first term, but he was prevented from releasing everything else by the FBI and the CIA, who cited national security concerns. He claimed that he was not afraid of revealing the truth about what happened on November 22, 1963, when Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas.
“I will release everything else,” Trump said. “I don’t care what they say. The American people deserve to know the truth. And I will expose the deep state and their lies.”
About 95% of the CIA documents within the JFK Assassination Records Collection have been released so far, but some of them are still redacted or withheld. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has also released thousands of other documents from various agencies and sources over the years.
However, some researchers and activists have sued NARA and Biden for violating the law and keeping some records secret. They argue that there is no legitimate reason to withhold information that is more than 60 years old and that could shed light on one of the most controversial events in American history.
The official investigation into Kennedy’s assassination concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone as the gunman, but many conspiracy theories have emerged over the decades, implicating various groups and individuals, such as the CIA, the Mafia, Cuba, the Soviet Union, Lyndon Johnson, and even George H.W. Bush.
Trump did not specify what he expected to find in the unreleased JFK files or why he believed they would expose the deep state. He also did not explain how he would overcome the resistance of the intelligence agencies and other officials who have blocked the full disclosure so far.
