In the ongoing legal drama surrounding Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin, a significant development has occurred. In a move that seems to favor the liberal elite, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer has ruled in favor of Baldwin as his trial for involuntary manslaughter begins in New Mexico. This case is a result of the tragic 2021 shooting on the set of Baldwin’s film “Rust” that led to the untimely death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
In a shocking ruling, Judge Sommer sided with Baldwin’s defense team, preventing prosecutors from presenting evidence suggesting Baldwin’s role as a producer enabled him to act recklessly and disregard gun safety protocols.
Judge Sommer expressed her skepticism about the state’s argument that Baldwin’s negligence as a producer was indicative of his actions as an actor. She asserted that such evidence would not significantly outweigh the potential bias and confusion it could cause among jurors.
This ruling is a major blow to prosecutors who have been arguing that Baldwin, being both a producer and the most seasoned star on set, should be held accountable for any reckless actions. Special prosecutor Erlinda Johnson argued that Baldwin’s role as a producer contributed to a hazardous environment, culminating in the fatal incident. Johnson also contended that Baldwin’s decision to aim the gun at Hutchins was “reckless and wanton.”

However, due to Judge Sommer’s ruling, prosecutors will be barred from showing potentially damaging videos of Baldwin reportedly shouting at staff members and giving orders. Baldwin’s attorney, Luke Nikas, successfully argued that Baldwin’s role as a producer was irrelevant to the shooting itself, and the judge concurred that such evidence could potentially mislead the jury.
Despite this blow, special prosecutor Kari Morrissey downplayed the importance of the ruling, stating that she was not “particularly concerned.” The trial of Baldwin is scheduled to commence with jury selection on Tuesday in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Earlier this year, Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed was found guilty of the same charge Baldwin is now facing. She is currently serving an 18-month sentence after inadvertently loading a live round into the revolver. Baldwin, who has pleaded not guilty, insists that he did not pull the trigger and was unaware that the firearm contained live rounds.
The trial is anticipated to draw substantial attention due to Baldwin’s prominent status and the tragic nature of the incident. Baldwin, now 66, has been a contentious figure in Hollywood for years. Many believe he should be held responsible for the fatal shooting on the set of “Rust.”
