In a blatant display of judicial overreach and political bias, Judge Reggie Walton has faced a stern reprimand from a D.C. court of appeals panel for approving unconstitutional surveillance tactics. Walton’s decision to allow the Department of Justice to spy on a January 6th defendant’s computer without a warrant, under the guise of probing into “controversial political opinions,” has been exposed as nothing short of an abuse of power driven by his own political animus.
It is evident that Judge Walton, who didn’t hesitate to lambaste Donald Trump on CNN, has allowed his personal vendetta against the former president to cloud his judgment. The appeals court condemned Walton’s actions, stating that he “plainly erred” by not considering if the computer-monitoring condition was related to sentencing factors or necessary for achieving sentencing purposes, as highlighted by Julie Kelly.
The Article 3 Project’s Mike Davis didn’t mince words when he suggested that Judge Walton ought to “spend less time moonlighting as a CNN commentator? And more time learning basic law?” His critique cuts deep into the heart of Walton’s unprofessional conduct.
Maybe Judge Reggie Walton should spend less time moonlighting as a CNN commentator?
And more time learning basic law? https://t.co/PHUj8YCbyo

Davis previously filed a complaint against Walton for his appearances on CNN where he aired grievances against Trump, potentially revealing bias against numerous January 6 defendants and supporters of the former president.
We are witnessing a dangerous trend where federal judges like Reggie Walton believe they have carte blanche authority to make extrajudicial statements about President Trump — an egregious violation of judicial canons and an assault on impartiality in our legal system,” Davis asserted in his comprehensive 13-page complaint.
Canon 3A(6) of the Code of Conduct for United States Judges states:
“A judge should not make public comment on the merits of a matter pending or impending in any court.”
Judge Reggie Walton violated this Canon.
This is highly prejudicial to President Trump, who is facing 4… https://t.co/RgyKrVaIWH

This complaint was directed at Chief Judge Sri Srinivasan of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals by Davis who highlighted that Walton had overseen several Capitol riot cases and had defended his comments made during CNN interviews. Despite this defense, it is clear that such behavior from a sitting federal judge casts doubt on their ability to remain neutral and undermines public trust in our judiciary.
In response to these events, Donald Trump has taken action by filing a motion for Judge Merchan to recuse himself from ongoing cases due to potential conflicts stemming from Biden contributions and radical activism within his family. This move underscores the necessity for unbiased adjudication within our courts — something that seems increasingly rare in today’s politically charged climate.
It’s high time that judges like Reggie Walton remember their oath — their duty is not to serve as partisan commentators but rather as impartial arbiters upholding justice without fear or favor. The integrity of our legal system depends on it.
