In a baffling display of terminology, major media outlets such as CNN and NBC News have resorted to the peculiar term “Easter worshippers” to describe Christians during one of their holiest times, as Easter draws near. This choice of words has sparked outrage and confusion among social media users and conservative commentators who argue that the term dilutes the Christian identity.
This odd phrasing emerged in reports about the heart-wrenching tragedy in South Africa, where 45 individuals lost their lives after a bus they were traveling in fell off a cliff in Limpopo province last Thursday. These victims were en route to an Easter conference when they met their untimely end, leaving behind only one survivor who is critically injured.
Instead of properly identifying the victims as Christians, headlines from various news sources used the term “Easter worshippers,” which did not sit well with many. CNN’s headline declared, “Bus carrying Easter worshippers falls off cliff killing 45 people in South Africa,” with similar language appearing in People Magazine, NBC News, and numerous other publications.
The use of “Easter worshippers” instead of “Christians” has been met with fierce criticism. Red Eagle Politics, a polling and elections analyst, expressed his frustration bluntly: “They’re doing this again. We are Christians, not ‘Easter worshippers,'” emphasizing that the worship is directed at Christ, not the holiday itself.
This isn’t the first time this controversial term has surfaced. Back in 2019, after Islamic extremists committed heinous acts against Christians during Easter celebrations in Sri Lanka, former President Barack Obama referred to the victims using this same perplexing label. His exact words were: “The attacks on tourists and Easter worshippers in Sri Lanka are an attack on humanity. On a day devoted to love, redemption, and renewal, we pray for the victims and stand with the people of Sri Lanka.”
Other media outlets and political figures like Hilary Clinton also adopted this strange phraseology. The repetition of this term by prominent Democrats led former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to question its origins: “How do President Obama and Secretary Clinton both come up with Easter worshippers in their tweets about the murders in Sri Lanka? To have both of them use the same term the same day is strange,” Gingrich remarked skeptically. He then suggested that perhaps this was a deliberate attempt by left-leaning individuals to avoid acknowledging Christianity: “Is Easter Worshipper the left’s new way to avoid the word Christian? Pathetic.”
