It’s a strange turn of events when a former CIA director, Michael Morell who served under Obama, starts backing Nikki Haley’s presidential campaign for 2024. And not just any former CIA director, but one who was caught up in a significant controversy during the 2020 election.
Remember when there were allegations about Hunter Biden’s laptop being a source of Russian disinformation? Well, Morell was at the forefront of those claims. As it turns out, subsequent investigations proved these allegations to be false, but not before they had done considerable damage to the media narrative.
Now here’s where it gets interesting: despite holding different stances from Trump on quite a few issues such as immigration, social policy and spending, Haley is now receiving support from Morell and others within the national security establishment.
Haley’s push for increased foreign military involvement has been criticized by some as having neoconservative leanings. In fact, her advisory team includes members of a group that is actively seeking to revive support for expanded US military engagement overseas.
It doesn’t stop there. FEC records show that a number of former intelligence and national security officials are rallying behind Haley’s bid. They view her as an alternative to Trump in the GOP primary, even though her positions on key issues diverge from his.
