Griffin alleged, “he’s good friends with Trump, and at one point, I don’t know if you remember, but he was giving out million dollar checks to people if they would vote for Trump. That’s illegal. It’s unconstitutional and illegal, so that was happening.” This is a demonstrable lie. Musk’s high-profile giveaway was explicitly for individuals who signed a pledge supporting free speech, a cornerstone American principle. There was no connection to voting for President Trump, a fact easily verifiable but conveniently ignored by Griffin and the media platforms that amplify her vitriol.
The coordinated media blackout on this story is a testament to their unwavering commitment to protecting their own. Where are the prime-time specials on the dangers of election denial? Where are the op-eds from so-called democracy experts warning that Griffin’s rhetoric undermines faith in our institutions? Their silence is a confirmation that their supposed principles were never about safeguarding democracy, but about silencing and dismantling the MAGA movement and the leadership of President Trump. They cheered when states moved to legally challenge the 2020 election results, but now give a free pass to a celebrity who, with zero evidence, calls the 2024 election illegitimate.
