The Midtown Manhattan mass shooting on July 28, 2025, has left five people dead, including an NYPD officer, and one person critically injured. In addition, four others sustained minor injuries while fleeing the building. The attack unfolded inside 345 Park Avenue, a 44-story tower that houses Blackstone, NFL headquarters, KPMG, and other major firms. As investigators piece together what happened, the city is focusing on the stories of bravery, survival, and grief behind the headlines.
Officer Didarul Islam’s Journey and Sacrifice
Among those killed was 36-year-old NYPD officer Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant who had served just over three years in the department. Assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx, Officer Islam was working a paid security detail at the Park Avenue building when the gunman opened fire. Mayor Eric Adams described meeting with Islam’s family and delivering the devastating news to his father, who has now lost his only son. Islam leaves behind a pregnant wife and two young sons. Colleagues and community members remember him as a man of deep faith, committed to his city, and always willing to step forward to help others. His final act was putting himself in harm’s way to shield others.
Survival Inside the Tower
For those working in the building, the horror began at 6:28 p.m. Surveillance video shows the shooter parking a black BMW, stepping out with an M4 rifle, and immediately opening fire inside the lobby. Office workers described hearing the shots and rushing to barricade themselves in conference rooms with furniture or hiding under desks. Texts to family members poured out from employees trapped on upper floors, as the sound of gunfire and police commands echoed through the building. On the 33rd floor, where the gunman ended his rampage, people clung to each other and prayed silently as officers worked floor by floor to secure the tower.
Unsung Heroes Who Stood Their Ground
Though Officer Islam is the most visible hero of the night, there were many others who acted quickly and courageously. Security guards tried to lead employees to safety. Officers on duty inside the building ran toward the gunfire without hesitation. One small but striking act captured on surveillance video showed the shooter allow a woman exiting the elevator to walk free before he continued his attack upstairs. Emergency responders provided aid to the wounded even as the chaos unfolded, helping to prevent a greater loss of life.
What Happened in the Lobby
According to the police commissioner, the gunman opened fire the moment he entered the lobby. His first shots struck Officer Islam, then a woman who was hiding behind a pillar, and a security guard crouched behind the desk. Another man was also hit before the shooter moved toward the elevator bank, spraying the lobby with gunfire. After letting a woman walk past unharmed, he rode to the 33rd floor, where he continued to fire and ultimately took his own life. Investigators later confirmed that four civilians were killed, one person was critically injured, and four others were treated for minor injuries.
Shooter Identified as Shane Devon Tamura
Authorities have identified the shooter as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas. After driving cross-country for several days, Tamura parked outside the building on Park Avenue and carried out the attack wearing body armor and armed with an M4 rifle. Inside his car, investigators found a rifle case, ammunition, a loaded revolver, additional magazines, a backpack, and medication prescribed to Tamura. The NYPD bomb squad cleared the vehicle of explosives. While Tamura’s documented mental health history has been confirmed by officials, his motive for choosing this building is still unknown.
A City Coming Together to Heal
In the days following the attack, New Yorkers have been mourning and rallying in support of the victims’ families. Mayor Adams praised Officer Islam as a hero, and Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association, spoke movingly about Islam’s dedication to his family, saying he regularly worked long hours and overtime to provide for them. Vigils have been held in Manhattan and the Bronx. NFL employees and local community groups have launched fundraising efforts to assist the injured survivor and the families of the victims. The NYPD and FBI continue to investigate every aspect of the shooter’s background and movements.
Looking Ahead
Though the investigation is still in its early stages, the stories of courage and loss are already defining this tragedy. From the quick-thinking workers who survived on the upper floors, to the building staff who guided others to safety, to Officer Islam’s ultimate sacrifice, this has become a story not only of what happened but of the people who stood strong in its aftermath. The city now turns to supporting the families and finding answers to prevent another such attack.
