It’s quite clear that Congressman Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) is in hot water, and it’s not hard to see why. As a member of the so-called progressive “Squad,” Bowman has been stirring the pot with his controversial comments on Israel’s war against Hamas, which he has had the audacity to label as “genocide.” Such inflammatory rhetoric, coupled with his criticism of President Joe Biden’s decisions, has resulted in a strained relationship with many of his former supporters, particularly those within the Jewish community.
According to Jewish Insider, this tension was made painfully obvious when Bowman clumsily asked a prominent Jewish figure for a photo op. It seems that Bowman is desperate to prove his alliance with the Jewish community, but his actions speak louder than any staged photo could.

Bowman initially won over voters in 2020 by pledging support for the Abraham Accords, a peace initiative spearheaded by the Trump administration. However, he later reneged on this promise and began criticizing the deal, causing disillusionment among his supporters.
The divide between Bowman and his Jewish constituents deepened after the October 7th, 2023 attack by Hamas that led to the deaths of 1,400 Jewish civilians and hundreds taken hostage. His criticism of Israel’s response has alienated many voters, and recent polls show him lagging behind his primary challenger, Westchester County Executive George Latimer, who has expressed steadfast support for Israel.
Despite his contentious stance, Bowman insists he still has substantial backing from Jewish voters. Yet, his absence from key community events and gatherings such as Shabbat meals and Westchester Jewish Council meetings only stokes the belief that he is dismissive of his constituents.
William Schrag, the former president of the Westchester Jewish Council, pointed out Bowman’s consistent no-show at important events, painting a picture of a congressman disengaged from his community. This sentiment is shared by other leaders like Justin Brasch, a Jewish Democrat and White Plains councilman, who lambasted Bowman for not making an effort to connect with the Jewish community. They argue that his actions and lack of communication show a blatant disregard for their concerns and needs.
With the primary looming on June 25th, the tension is undeniable. Bowman’s opponents, fortified by substantial financial support from pro-Israel organizations like AIPAC, are capitalizing on his perceived negligence and contentious positions. The coming weeks will be pivotal as Bowman scrambles to win back the trust and support of his district’s voters.
