Israel has just made a groundbreaking decision in the fight against terrorist group Hamas, and it serves as an example to us all. On Wednesday, October 11, the Israeli government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reached a historic agreement with Benny Gantz, leader of the opposition party, to work together.
This agreement is meant to form a national unity government in order to address Hamas and its recent invasion of Israel.
The newly formed cabinet will primarily consist of three people: Netanyahu, Gantz, and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Additionally, it is expected that five members from Gantz’s party will be added to the security cabinet as well.
Justice minister Yariv Levin has expressed his support for this decision by stating it “is the right and necessary thing to do — from here, we work together.”

Current members of the opposition such as MK Avigdor Liberman have made their support clear in wanting to eliminate Hamas. In a statement on Twitter he said “Anything less than the complete elimination of Hamas – and Hamas cannot be eliminated without land entry into Gaza City and especially the destruction of lower Gaza, will not bring the desired result.”
Yair Lapid, current head of the opposition has refused to join a national unity government if certain religious nationalist parties remain in power according to Times of Israel.

This historic agreement between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and Benny Gantz’ opposition serves as an example that political parties can come together when needed most. This shows that politics can put aside differences during times where compromise must be made for safety reasons or otherwise.
Although there is still much work left to be done before this is accomplished both leaders believe that working together can help Israel take back control from Hamas forces who invaded Israeli land on Saturday killing innocent civilians along the way.
