Iranian spies attempted to hire a human smuggler to assassinate two Iranian-born journalists living in London, aiming to intimidate dissidents worldwide.
The plan included a car bomb attack on Iran International’s studios, later changed to a knife attack at the journalists’ homes.
The spies sought to use a criminal already in the country to maintain plausible deniability.
Fardad Farahzad said, “I didn’t know there was a specific threat against me until now.”
“Hearing it firsthand makes it more real,” continued the journalist.
Adding, “It’s shocking to see people who are casually talking about harming me.”
Sima Sabet said, “The fact that they tried to kill me shows I did my job well, I was effective… I didn’t betray people and I stood with them, even with my life on the line.”
The journalists were targeted for their critical media coverage of Iran, and the plot was ultimately foiled with the help of the smuggler, who was a double agent for a Western intelligence agency.
