Once a term ridiculed as a right-wing conspiracy theory, the concept of the ‘deep state’ has been acknowledged not only as real but also as an integral part of American life by several leftist commentators and media outlets. This term, popularized by former President Donald Trump amid the Russian collusion debacle, refers to unelected bureaucrats who act like a fourth branch of government, particularly within intelligence agencies.
George Stephanopoulos, previously Clinton’s White House press secretary and currently an ABC anchor, recently appeared on ‘The View’ to promote his new book ‘The Situation Room: The Inside Story of Presidents in Crisis.’ During his appearance, he made some startling claims about the deep state.
‘I interviewed about 100 duty officers from the White House… The CIA, DIA, Defense Department, military… some people call them the deep state,’ he said. He went on to assert that ‘the deep state is packed with patriots.’
Stephanopoulos continued, ‘People who go to work every single day on the frontlines of the most intense crises the country faces… They don’t care about political parties. They’re there to serve the presidency and the institution.’
It’s not just Stephanopoulos; other left-wing influencers have also admitted that what was once dismissed as a right-wing fantasy is not only real but beneficial for America. In March, The New York Times published an article titled, ‘It Turns Out The Deep State Is Actually Kind Of Awesome.’
The article tries to paint a rosy picture of the deep state as friendly government workers and scientists without political bias. It highlights a scientist who tracks asteroids, an EPA official who removes lead pipes, and a Department of Labor official who combats illegal child labor. However, it conveniently ignores mentioning the intelligence agencies.
