During a recent Real Time With Bill Maher appearance, former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder downplayed concerns about Biden’s lagging poll numbers. Despite Biden consistently trailing Trump in swing states, Holder expressed confidence that the mainstream media would boost Biden’s popularity.
Maher highlighted the president’s dwindling approval rating among traditionally Democrat-leaning demographics. “Every poll I read indicates that Democrats are losing their base. Non-white working-class voters have shifted by 61 points since 2012. That’s a significant change over 12 years. In 2012, when you were Attorney General, Obama won this demographic by 67 points, but Biden only won it by 48,” Maher noted.
“Firstly, you’re comparing March to November. We need to consider where people stand right now. I believe we’ll see a shift towards Biden among working-class people of all races by November,” responded Holder.
The former attorney general dismissed concerns about Biden’s declining popularity among black voters, attributing it to the fact that Barrack Obama was “an extremely popular African American running for the first time.” He also suggested that mainstream media would help increase Biden’s poll numbers.
“There is work to be done, but I’m optimistic that if we stay committed and focused, and as the media turns its attention to making this a binary choice between a person with age and cognitive issues…that would be Trump,” said Holder. “Against someone who has accomplished much.”
Holder concluded with an assertion that contradicts months of polling data showing dissatisfaction with Biden’s policies, especially regarding the economy. He claimed Americans will look back on the Trump years and conclude they are better off now than they were then.
This isn’t the first time Holder has made such bold statements. After Alvin Bragg indicted Trump in June, Holder told MSNBC’s Jen Psaki that the indictments would have an “electoral effect.”
“The idea that you could have a trial, defend it, be convicted, somehow win the election, be sworn in as president or whenever it happens; that seems inconsistent with our notion of fairness, of the rule of law,” Holder said. “At that point, I would hope that an impeachment proceeding might be considered – not only considered but brought and ultimately he would be removed from office.”
Holder continued by saying, “I’m not a political pundit, but I think at some point, you certainly won’t get beyond the Trump cult base; but for people who are on the fringes of that, on the outside of that, are likely to be negatively impacted by all these cases brought against the former president. And I think that will have some electoral effect.”
