Disneyland is the “Happiest Place on Earth”, but one mother found out that it wasn’t so happy when she was singled out for breastfeeding her 10-month-old son in public.
Brittni Medina and her husband, both annual pass holders to Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim, were standing in line when their son got hungry. So what did any normal mother do? She fed him from her breasts while they waited.
Unfortunately, two women nearby weren’t too pleased with this decision and made some snarky comments about how she should go somewhere more private instead.
Rather than ignoring the remarks, Medina decided to get revenge by having her husband take a picture of the situation with his disapproving faces as background scenery.
Medina took to social media to post the photo and recount her experience being shamed for breastfeeding in public.
She wrote on Facebook that the purpose of posting was not for attention but rather “attention to the fact NO WOMEN SHOULD BE SHAMED FOR FEEDING THEIR BABY UNCOVERED.”
While many mothers don’t find anything wrong with openly nursing their children in public, there are still a lot of people who view it as inappropriate or immodest behavior. This isn’t necessarily why these women criticized Medina though, they just believed that she should have gone somewhere more private instead of doing it right there where everyone could see.
On one hand, we can definitely sympathize with Medina’s reaction here because no woman should ever be shamed for feeding her child regardless if she covers up or not.
On the other hand though, responding back by taking a picture wasn’t really necessary either since this only further escalated the situation and put innocent bystanders in an awkward position where they had to witness an unnecessary dispute between two adults over something so small like this.
Rather than antagonizing those who disagreed with her decision, perhaps it would have been better if she simply ignored them instead – two wrongs don’t make a right after all.
