In an unexpected twist, the Black Lives Matter (BLM) organization has openly dismissed the seemingly preordained selection of Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee. This audacious position emerged in a tweet from the group, where they detailed their apprehensions and criticisms about the nomination process.
The tweet kicked off by spotlighting the chain of events that appeared to set the stage for Harris’s nomination. BLM lambasted the Democratic Party’s strategy, noting that Harris failed to secure any delegates in the primaries. They used this glaring reality to reinforce their claim that the nomination process is fundamentally flawed.
“A 24-hour process of talking to party bosses is not democratic, nor is it a process Democrats should be proud of,” BLM tweeted. The organization continued to voice their dissatisfaction with what they see as an undemocratic nature of the nomination process. “We do not live in a dictatorship. Delegates are not oligarchs. Installing Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee and an unknown vice president without any public voting process would make the modern Democratic Party a party of hypocrites. We call on the @DNC to create a process that allows for public participation in the nomination process, not just a nomination by party delegates.”

Journalist Kat Stafford revealed that BLM is demanding the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to promptly organize an informal, nationwide virtual snap primary before the DNC convention in August. This demand came shortly after Vice President Kamala Harris gathered enough delegates for the nomination. BLM’s push for a more democratic process seems to be a direct challenge to the current path of the Democratic Party.
This advocacy for democracy within the nomination process appears to clash with the ideological underpinnings of some of BLM’s main founders, Alicia Garza, and Patrisse Cullors. Both have declared their support for Marxist principles. In 2015, Garza stated that “social movements all over the world have used Marx and Lenin as a foundation to interrupt these systems that are really negatively impacting the majority of people.” She also stressed that it was “not possible for a world to emerge where black lives matter if it’s under capitalism, and it’s not possible to abolish capitalism without a struggle against national oppression.”
Libs were thrown into turmoil over the announcement.

Final Thoughts
The blatant rejection of Kamala Harris by BLM is a clear indication of the deep-seated issues within the Democratic Party. Their call for a more democratic process is an open challenge to the party’s current trajectory. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds and what impact it will have on future elections.
