The shooting and the suspect
An 18-year-old Loyola University student, Sheridan Gorman, was shot and killed in Chicago over the weekend. Police arrested Jose Medina-Medina in connection with the killing. This is a tragic loss for family, friends, and the campus community. The facts from law enforcement are still unfolding, but an innocent young life was taken and the city deserves clear answers and responsible leadership while investigators do their work.
The alderwoman’s comments
Chicago Alderwoman Maria Hadden gave an interview where she suggested Gorman might have been “in the wrong place at the wrong time” and that she and her friends could have startled the shooter. That line of reasoning comes off as victim blaming. Saying a murdered student was partly at fault because she was out with friends is not consolation. It shifts attention away from the person who pulled the trigger and toward the victim.
Accountability and policy questions
Politicians owe the public more than platitudes. When shootings happen voters should hear about arrests, prosecution plans, and steps to prevent more violence. They should not hear excuses that downplay criminal responsibility. The arrest of an alleged shooter is a start, but public safety requires tough questions about law enforcement resources, enforcement of existing laws, and policies that affect who is in our communities.
What citizens should demand
Families and neighborhoods deserve safety and honest leadership. Residents should demand transparent updates from police, full accountability for violent criminals, and policies that protect law abiding citizens. Elected officials should stop offering sympathy for criminals and start offering protection and solutions for victims and neighborhoods that are tired of being unsafe.

"Wrong place" = anywhere in Chicago
"Wrong time" = 24 hours, 7 days a week https://t.co/ltNztNjJ5L— End Wokeness (@EndWokeness) March 23, 2026
