Despite recent legal setbacks, former President Trump’s popularity remains undeterred among Republicans. This is evident from the fact that a mere 1 in 10 Republicans reported reduced likelihood to vote for him in Reuters/Ipsos and NPR/PBS NewsHour polls, following his conviction. In fact, 55% claimed it didn’t influence their decision while a significant 34% stated it made them more likely to vote for him.
Comedian Bill Maher, in a conversation with journalist Kara Swisher, projected that President Joe Biden will not be able to secure re-election in 2024. He alluded to the existence of ‘shy Trump voters’ who are hesitant to publicly endorse Trump but would cast their votes for him nonetheless.
“Almost everybody who I could think of who I really respect, we’re kind of all on the same page here: which is we lose our credibility if we don’t talk about… as if they’re not going to notice Biden’s old,” Maher said.
“First of all, I think it’s a moot point at this point. He’s [Biden] going to [expletive] lose,” Maher added.
He further elaborated on the concept of ‘shy Trump voters’, stating “The shy Trump voter is specifically something else. The shy Trump voter is the one who’s going to vote for Trump, but doesn’t want you to know it because it’s a little de classé and they don’t want it in whatever the company they’re in. I mean, any place you went in this town, no one would say they’re voting for Trump, and I’m sure he’s going to get some votes.”
The conviction has had little impact on Trump’s popularity, as per the polls. Trump dismissed the trial as a politically motivated move and accused Judge Juan Merchan of bias.
“We were at 5 percent or 6 percent in this district, in this area,” Trump said in New York.
Looking forward, polling data reveals that 9 out of 10 Republicans remain loyal to Trump post his conviction, hinting at improving re-election odds for him in the upcoming 2024 election despite ongoing legal challenges.
