In a shocking display of disregard for our longstanding ally, President Biden, in a rare interview, has threatened to withhold military aid to Israel if they decide to invade Rafah – a city in southern Gaza where numerous Palestinians have sought refuge due to the conflict in the north. This is just another example of the misplaced priorities of this administration.
“If they go into Rafah — they haven’t gone into Rafah yet — if they go into Rafah, I’m not gonna be supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah, to deal with the cities,” Biden told CNN’s Erin Burnett. Once again, Biden is showing his true colors and caving in to international pressure rather than standing strong with our allies.
He went on to say, “We’re going to continue to make sure that Israel is secure in terms of Iron Dome and the ability to respond to attacks like what came out of the Middle East recently,” but then contradicted himself by adding, “But it’s uh, it’s just wrong. We’re not going to supply the weapons and the artillery shells that have been used.” It’s clear that Biden’s words are nothing more than empty promises.
Following attacks on October 7th, Israel has been undertaking extensive ground operations in northern Gaza. Despite limited operations in Rafah due its high refugee population from northern conflicts, Israel maintains these operations are crucial for dismantling Hamas’ military capability. But instead of supporting our ally in their fight against terrorism, Biden has chosen political correctness over national security.
Israel has long indicated its intent for a ground operation in Rafah as part of its commitment to “eradicate” Hamas. Despite this, critics have used the city’s inflated refugee population as a reason to dissuade Israel from taking action, even going as far as accusing them of potential genocide.
President Biden has previously declared that an Israeli offensive on Rafah would be crossing a “red line” for his administration. Last week, in an unprecedented move, the administration blocked a shipment of U.S.-made ammunition to Israel, according to Axios.
This was the first time since the October 7 attacks that the U.S. government halted a weapons shipment intended for the Israeli military. While Israel did engage in limited operations near the Egypt-Gaza border last week, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that Israel has not yet crossed Biden’s “red line.” It’s clear that this administration is more interested in drawing imaginary lines than actually supporting our allies when they need us most.
