Despite the delusions of the Biden administration, it appears they are in for a rude awakening. The traditionally blue state of New York is showing signs of turning red, as President Joe Biden faces an unexpected uphill battle. Elected officials, union leaders, and political consultants are all sounding alarms about the dwindling support for Biden, who only four years ago, won the state by a whopping 23 points.
With polls showcasing a steady decline in his support, there’s a palpable sense of panic to divert resources to New York in an attempt to bolster Biden’s faltering campaign and prop up Democrats in pivotal swing districts that could tip the balance of power in the House.
But in typical fashion, Biden’s team has turned a blind eye to New York, arrogantly assuming they can win the state without lifting a finger. However, their complacency may be their downfall. Private surveys conducted in a swing district in New York reveal that former President Donald Trump is leading Biden by a slim margin, indicating that this race might not be as one-sided as they thought.
Over the past four months, public polls have shown Biden’s lead slipping away to just 8 points across New York. This is a significant drop in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans 2 to 1.
The Democratic Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine seems to be one of the few Democrats aware of this shift, admitting, “We’re still acting like this is a one-party state, which for pretty much 20, 25 years it has been. I truly believe we’re a battleground state now.”
Despite the warning signs, Biden’s campaign, already struggling after an underwhelming debate performance, continues to ignore New York. Instead, they’ve been focusing on traditional battleground states like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania in an attempt to quell concerns about Biden’s age and mental capacity.
Democratic Party officials, consultants, and political leaders are all voicing their urgency for Biden to pay attention to New York. A contested race in this state could further complicate his reelection bid and drain resources from other crucial swing states. As former Democratic New York Gov. David Paterson warned, “The money that needs to be spent here will be subtracted from other areas he’s going to lose.”
Even though top Democrats in the state, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have publicly backed Biden, their support seems shaky at best. Schumer has been particularly guarded in his public comments following the president’s poor debate performance.
As Democratic lawmakers scramble back to the Capitol, there’s a desperate push for unity within the party. However, Schumer has remained silent on whether he agrees with Sen. Patty Murray’s claim that Biden “must do more” to reassure Democrats and become a more dynamic candidate.
In 2022, Republican Lee Zeldin got closer than most Republicans have in recent years in the race for governor. Many believe his strong showing helped boost down-ballot Republicans in key state races.
The future is uncertain but one thing is clear: Trump is scheduled for sentencing in September and it’s anyone’s guess what impact this will have on the political landscape.
