Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla, X and Space X, has fiercely criticized House Democrats for their lack of support towards a bill aimed at strengthening election integrity and preventing non-citizens from voting in U.S. elections.
Musk’s comments were a response to a post by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) detailing the objectives of the Republican-backed SAVE Act.
This proposed legislation mandates state election officials to inquire about citizenship before distributing voter registration forms, a measure currently not required for obtaining federal voting forms. A recent New York Post report highlighted that this lack of requirement has resulted in non-citizens receiving voting forms in 49 states.
The SAVE Act also proposes to ease citizen registration for federal elections by accepting a wide range of documents as proof. It would grant states access to federal agency databases to purge noncitizens from voter rolls and verify citizenship for those lacking proof. Additionally, it would instruct the Department of Homeland Security to consider removal proceedings if a noncitizen is found to have registered to vote in federal elections.
To ensure newly naturalized citizens can exercise their right to vote, the act requires the Department of Homeland Security to notify state chief election officials whenever an individual gains citizenship.
Musk expressed his strong disapproval of those opposing the legislation in response to Speaker Johnson’s post. He remarked, “Those who oppose this are traitors. All Caps: TRAITORS,” he wrote. “What is the penalty for traitors again?”
