Well, folks, it was quite a spectacle on Thursday night as President Biden and former President Trump squared off in the first of two debates leading up to the 2024 election rematch. This face-off revealed key moments and implications for both campaigns.
Right from the start, President Biden was struggling, his voice betraying him due to a cold, according to his campaign. Add to that some bungled responses and lost train of thought, it wasn’t a great show for the 81-year-old president. The oldest in American history, Biden’s physical and mental stamina were called into question during this debate.
The debate spanned a broad spectrum of issues: economy, inflation, immigration, abortion, climate change, the January 6th attack, and overseas conflicts. Biden tried to highlight his administration’s economic achievements such as job creation and lower prescription drug costs but had to concede that more work is needed. Trump shot back by highlighting the current high inflation rates and boasted about creating the “greatest economy in the world” prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Biden stumbled when discussing the economy, which led Trump to mock him for “beating Medicaid to death.” His responses on immigration and abortion were shaky at best, giving Trump ample opportunities to strike. Trump cheered the overturning of Roe v. Wade while Biden promised to reinstate it if re-elected.
A touching moment occurred when Biden mentioned his late son Beau who served in Iraq as a response to Trump’s reported insult towards fallen soldiers. Trump denied ever calling troops “suckers and losers” and fired back at Biden over the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan.
The debate didn’t shy away from Trump’s recent legal troubles. Biden labeled him a “convicted felon” and brought up Trump’s alleged affair with a porn star. Trump retaliated by mentioning Hunter Biden’s legal issues and hinted that Biden himself might face charges post-presidency.
Regarding the January 6th attack, Trump remained unrepentant and continued to assert the 2020 election was rigged. When questioned about accepting the 2024 election results, he said he would if the vote was “fair” and “legal,” leaving room for further controversy.
Post-debate, Biden addressed his supporters, expressing confidence and readiness for the next round. Vice President Kamala Harris acknowledged a slow start but commended Biden’s strong finish. In contrast, Trump and his campaign declared a clear victory, using Biden’s struggles as ammunition for their campaign.
The debate left mixed impressions. Biden’s team emphasized Trump’s falsehoods and record-breaking grassroots fundraising while critics highlighted Biden’s inconsistent performance as an indicator of his potential unfitness for office. Both candidates are now focusing their campaigns on key battleground states, seeking to secure essential votes.
One of Trump’s standout moments was when he called out the White House’s “cheap fake” theme for Biden live on TV.
