Robert Kawada, a 43-year-old Massachusetts man, has been apprehended for the heinous act of deceitfully causing his ex-girlfriend to abort their unborn child by misrepresenting abortion pills as iron supplements and vitamins.
Kawada, a resident of Brookline, is facing charges that include poisoning, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a pregnant individual, and assault and battery on a family or household member.
As reported by Law&Crime, the victim and Kawada met via an online dating platform earlier this year. The identity of the victim remains undisclosed to the public.
In March, Kawada decided to end their relationship. Shortly after their breakup, the woman discovered she was pregnant. Despite the circumstances, she informed Kawada about her pregnancy. He claimed to have knowledge about pregnancies based on his past experiences with his ex-wife who had a child and his father who was an OB-GYN. Police reports indicate that Kawada gave her homemade raspberry leaf cookies which are known to potentially induce labor and can cause miscarriage during early pregnancy stages.
Kawada frequently expressed concern about her pale complexion and questioned her iron levels. He repeatedly gave her pills claiming they were iron supplements. He instructed her to dissolve these pills in her mouth rather than swallowing them directly, even going as far as pulling on her cheeks to ensure she was ingesting them.
The woman managed to spit out one of these pills and kept others in a plastic bag for safety reasons. When she told Kawada that she had swallowed the pill, he reacted with anger. As she continued to take these pills over several weeks, she started experiencing painful cramps and bleeding. Despite her discomfort, Kawada reassured her that everything was normal.
Just before their last encounter, the woman received a call from an individual posing as a nurse who informed her about her low iron levels. Shortly after this call, Kawada arrived with more pills for her to consume.
The so-called “nurse” called again later that day instructing her to take more pills. The woman complied.
Kawada had been persistently advising her to get an abortion which she steadfastly refused. She wanted to keep the baby and even offered to raise it by herself.
One night, she woke up suffering from severe cramps and noticed a discharge. According to Law&Crime reports, “She told detectives she felt as though she was having a miscarriage.” After finding out that the nurse who called her wasn’t actually a nurse but was using an internet number, she reached out to her family about the situation and subsequently contacted the Watertown police on May 2nd. Medical professionals confirmed at the hospital that she had indeed suffered a miscarriage.
The victim handed over one of the pills given by Kawada to the police who were able to confirm that it was Misoprostol – a drug used for abortions.
Investigations revealed disturbing search history on Kawada’s phone which included phrases like “9 week aborted fetus pics” and “telephone voice changer.”
Kawada is currently in custody with his bond set at $100,000.
