On May 16, 2024, a beacon of justice shone brightly in Texas as Governor Greg Abbott courageously pardoned an Uber driver, U.S. Army Sergeant Daniel Perry. Perry had been wrongfully convicted of murder for defending himself against a gun-wielding Black Lives Matter (BLM) agitator during a riot in July 2020.
Despite the lead detective concluding that Perry’s actions were in self-defense, he was unjustly sentenced to 25 years in prison in April 2023. However, Governor Abbott remained steadfast and true to his promise of pardoning Perry after the conviction. On May 16, he announced via press release his acceptance of a recommendation by the state’s Board of Pardons and Paroles for a complete pardon.
In the press release, Abbott said: “The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles conducted an exhaustive review of U.S. Army Sergeant Daniel Perry’s personal history and the facts surrounding the July 2020 incident and recommended a Full Pardon and Restoration of Full Civil Rights of Citizenship.” He added that they considered all available information including reports from the Travis County District Attorney and all testimony provided at trial.
The incident involved Perry shooting 28-year-old Garrett Foster in self-defense when Foster approached him with an AK-47-style rifle during a riot that engulfed Austin, Texas. Despite this clear act of self-defense, Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza criticized Abbott for intending to intervene.
In response to Garza’s attempt to press charges against Perry, Abbott stated in the press release: “Texas has one of the strongest ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive District Attorney. I thank the Board for its thorough investigation, and I approve their pardon recommendation.”
Garza, clearly putting his own political agenda above justice, responded with outrage at the pardon. He accused the board and the governor of acting contrary to law and creating a two-class system in Texas. However, it’s clear that his misguided anger is merely an attempt to undermine Abbott’s righteous decision.
Initially, it seemed as though anarchy would win this case. But thanks to Governor Abbott’s unwavering belief in the right to self-defense, justice prevailed. Despite his imperfections, Abbott stood strong and did what was right by pardoning Perry.
This is exactly the kind of bold leadership we need when facing relentless attacks from leftists who are hell-bent on eroding our rights like the Second Amendment.
Compromising with these unhinged political adversaries is no longer an option at this stage. We need more leaders like Abbott who will stand up for justice and our constitutional rights.
