As the high-profile trial of former President Donald Trump, led by Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, continues to dominate headlines, it’s becoming increasingly clear that this spectacle might be inadvertently fueling Trump’s potential 2024 presidential campaign. The trial, which centers around Trump’s plea of not guilty to 34 counts related to falsifying business records, has managed to eclipse other pressing news topics.
The prosecution’s key witness, ex-lawyer Michael Cohen, gave his testimony on Monday, shedding light on the alleged hush money payments made to actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. With the prosecution nearing the end of its witness list, all eyes are now on the defense and their upcoming arguments.
Meanwhile, on ABC’s “The View”, co-hosts voiced their concerns about how the media frenzy surrounding the trial might actually be benefiting Trump. Sara Haines criticized the media for its relentless coverage saying, “I would say when you say the Biden campaign has to get more active, I actually blame the media slightly. We talked last week a lot about how I don’t think people are able to watch this Trump trial 24-7. Now we’re talking about we’re in a campaign.”
“The irony is the people covering that news think they’re getting one up on Donald Trump while they’re handing him a lot of votes because of the coverage. It’s ridiculous,” she lamented.
Ana Navarro agreed with Haines’ viewpoint and highlighted how this situation could potentially disadvantage Biden’s campaign by saying, “I actually think this trial is somewhat helping Donald Trump because it’s keeping him off the trail and because we are not focusing on the stupid stuff he says on a daily basis. And that is helping him.”

The trial’s spotlight continues to shine brightly, raising questions about whether Democrats can redirect its focus to address a broader range of pressing issues facing voters instead of inadvertently propelling Trump’s campaign forward with excessive coverage.
Recent polls reveal Americans’ growing discontent with the Biden administration, particularly their struggle to afford everyday expenses from gas to groceries. A whopping 41% of Gallup respondents named inflation as the top issue plaguing the economy, thereby overshadowing any achievements Biden might want to take credit for.
Trump, on the other hand, has managed to consolidate his GOP base while remaining in the limelight during his trial. This has resulted in garnering sympathy from his supporters who view him as a martyr and undecided voters who might perceive his trials as politically motivated.
CNN’s Fareed Zakaria admitted that “Trump could always embroil himself in some kind of scandal, but trend-lines are not working in Biden’s favor,” he added. “I have to admit, none of this is playing out as I thought it would.”
“As someone worried about the prospects of a second Trump term, I think it’s best to be honest about reality,” Zakaria told viewers. He further noted that polls have “tended to underestimate” the support Trump enjoys among registered and likely voters. “I doubt that there are many shy Biden voters in the country.”
