A tragic incident occurred at the University of Pittsburgh’s construction site, where a woman lost her life after being crushed by a steel cylinder drum that rolled down a hill. The incident happened around 10:40 a.m. on Terrace Street in Oakland, near the Petersen Events Center, prompting immediate response from Pittsburgh Police and EMS.
Upon their arrival, responders found the woman with severe injuries to her head, which were described as “significant, grave injuries”. Eyewitnesses informed authorities that the victim was walking with colleagues when the large steel cylinder drum broke loose from the University of Pittsburgh’s Victory Heights construction site.
According to reports from officials to Pittsburgh’s Action News 4, the cylinder rolled down a hill at the construction site and through a fence before crushing the unidentified woman. The cylinder finally came to rest against a truck.
Despite efforts by a registered nurse who was nearby and attempted CPR, they were unable to save her life. Emily Bourne of Pittsburgh Public Safety stated that the woman was declared dead within one minute of medical personnel arriving on scene.
In response to this tragic event, the University of Pittsburgh issued an official statement: “Earlier today, a pedestrian was fatally injured near a construction site in the vicinity of DeSoto Street and Terrace Street.
