Sanders’ Radical Plan: Slash Your Workweek to Just Four Days!

In a move that has sparked controversy, Senator Bernie Sanders has proposed a bill to cut the standard US workweek from 40 hours to 32 hours.

This legislation would require employers to pay overtime for any hours worked beyond the new 32-hour limit.

Sanders contends that despite technological advancements boosting worker productivity, wages and working hours have stagnated for most Americans.

The bill aims to ensure that workers, not just corporate executives and shareholders, reap the benefits of technological progress.

However, during a hearing on the bill led by Sanders, several Republican senators voiced their opposition. They argued that such a mandate could potentially harm small businesses and trigger layoffs if companies cannot maintain their productivity levels.

“The financial gains from major advancements in artificial intelligence, automation, and new technology must benefit the working class, not just corporate CEOs and wealthy stockholders on Wall Street,” Sanders stated.

Recent trials of shorter workweeks have reported reduced stress, burnout, and increased productivity and well-being.

France, which adopted a 35-hour workweek in 2000, is considering further reducing it to 32 hours. Interestingly, most American workers surveyed expressed interest in a four-day workweek.
