Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas expressed confusion over the Republican push for his impeachment amidst the surge in illegal immigration at the U.S. southern border.
Mayorkas, who took office in February 2021, stated that he did not anticipate the level of polarization and politics surrounding his position.
“Very difficult to make sense of it,” Mayorkas said. “It’s very difficult. So I don’t try to make sense of it.”
“I’m doing my work. I’m doing my work. And um, making sure it doesn’t distract me from it,” he said.
“I did not expect this level of polarization. And I did not expect this level of politics,” Mayorkas said. “Level and nature of politics.”
Republicans have accused him of breaching trust and willfully refusing to comply with the law, leading to articles of impeachment being passed out of committee.
The border situation, with approximately 8.5 million encounters with illegal immigrants since Biden took office, has drawn bipartisan criticism and recognition as a crisis, with record numbers of encounters in fiscal year 2023.
