I attended Ed Sheeran’s concert at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday night, September 19, and I thought it was fantastic. But something beyond the music stayed with me. Before performing, Sheeran addressed the controversy surrounding his tour, the removal of rapper Macklemore, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He repeatedly emphasized that he never wanted to become a political activist or commentator. Having spent considerable time trying to understand this conflict myself, I found his remarks particularly interesting. Every time I think I understand one part of the situation, another piece of history or another legitimate concern adds a new layer. Sheeran acknowledged that he doesn’t know enough and is still listening and learning. I appreciated hearing someone publicly acknowledge the limits of his knowledge rather than pretending to have every answer. He also made clear that he wanted his concerts to remain places where people with different opinions could come together. As someone who was actually there, I thought that message was consistent with the atmosphere of an excellent concert.
How a Concert Tour Became a Political Controversy
The controversy began after Macklemore, who had been scheduled to open for Sheeran on his North American Loop Tour, made pro-Palestinian remarks during a September 5 performance in New Jersey. Objections from stadium owners, including New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, led to pressure on the tour to remove Macklemore. Sheeran told the Philadelphia audience that the decision had been made by the tour promoter rather than by him personally. I can’t know what’s in another person’s heart, but hearing him deliver those remarks in person left me with the impression that he was attempting to speak sincerely about a difficult subject while keeping his music focused on bringing people together.
Understanding the Conflict: Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel
The situation becomes easier to understand when we recognize that Gaza, the West Bank, Hamas, and the Palestinian Authority are not interchangeable. Hamas, an Islamist political and armed movement designated as a terrorist organization by the United States, seized control of Gaza in 2007. For Palestinians, decades of occupation, restrictions on movement, settlement expansion, and uncertainty about independence have created profound fears about their own future. Hamas is not synonymous with the Palestinian people, just as the actions of Israel’s government should not be confused with the views of every Israeli. These distinctions are essential to understanding why the conflict has resisted so many attempts at resolution.
What Has Happened in Gaza Since October 7?
Following the October 7 attack, Israel launched a military campaign with the stated goals of destroying Hamas’s military capabilities, recovering the hostages, and preventing another attack. The destruction and loss of life in Gaza have been enormous. Palestinian health authorities have reported more than 73,000 deaths since the war began, although determining the precise breakdown between civilians and combatants remains difficult. Large portions of Gaza’s housing and infrastructure have been destroyed or severely damaged, and much of the population has endured repeated displacement. A ceasefire agreement announced in October 2025 reduced large-scale fighting but did not end the violence or resolve the underlying disputes. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Israeli airstrikes and other attacks continued to cause casualties and displacement in September 2026. The agency also reported severe shortages of medical supplies, inadequate shelter, and widespread problems accessing safe water. Israel maintains that its military operations target Hamas and other military objectives, that it takes precautions to limit civilian casualties, and that Hamas’s operations in populated areas make those efforts particularly difficult. The West Bank Is a Different Problem

Nevertheless, tensions there have intensified amid Israeli military operations, Palestinian attacks, settler violence, demolitions, and disputes over land and movement restrictions. Israel argues that military operations and security controls are necessary to prevent terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians. Palestinians contend that the extensive restrictions governing travel, construction, employment, and access to agricultural land make ordinary life increasingly difficult and undermine the possibility of establishing an independent state. Israeli settlements are another central issue. Many Israelis emphasize historical and religious connections to the territory, while Palestinians view expanding settlements as the steady loss of land they expect to form part of a future state. International law generally regards the settlements as illegal, a position Israel disputes. The UN reported more than 1,600 settler attacks resulting in Palestinian casualties or property damage during the first eight months of 2026. The same report documented continued Israeli military operations, Palestinian casualties, demolitions, and displacement. Israeli civilians have also faced attacks. These developments demonstrate why a discussion focused exclusively on Gaza cannot explain the entire Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Was Israel’s Response Disproportionate?
Sheeran’s use of the word “disproportionate” deserves some explanation because it has different meanings in ordinary conversation and international humanitarian law. In everyday language, people may use the term to describe the enormous difference between the approximately 1,200 people killed in the October 7 attack and the far greater number of deaths and extensive destruction that followed in Gaza. Legally, however, proportionality is not determined by comparing the total casualties on opposing sides. The relevant rule asks whether the civilian harm anticipated from a particular attack would be excessive compared with the concrete and direct military advantage expected. Israel argues that its attacks pursue legitimate military objectives and that casualty totals alone cannot establish violations of that rule. UN experts and human rights organizations have alleged that certain Israeli operations were disproportionate or indiscriminate. Determining whether a particular attack violated international law requires examining the target, available intelligence, anticipated civilian harm, expected military advantage, and precautions taken. Israel’s stated security objectives and the suffering of Palestinian civilians are separate issues that must both be examined. Sheeran’s remarks expressed his view of the overall humanitarian consequences; they were not a legal ruling on every Israeli military operation.
What I Took Away From the Concert
I’ve attended enough concerts to know that a performer can easily lose an audience by turning an evening of entertainment into a political lecture. That wasn’t my experience Saturday night. Sheeran addressed the controversy directly, explained his concerns, acknowledged his uncertainty, and eventually brought the conversation back to the purpose of his music. His message was that people with opposing views should still be able to stand next to one another at a concert and share an experience. He emphasized love, hope, and unity. Of course, a few remarks from a concert stage cannot settle the arguments over Israel’s security, Palestinian independence, Hamas, settlements, or the conduct of the war. They weren’t intended to. What I found memorable was his willingness to acknowledge that he was still learning while continuing to express concern about the suffering he was seeing. That is a different approach from presenting a celebrity’s opinion as the final word on a complicated international conflict.
Final Thoughts
I went to Philadelphia expecting a great Ed Sheeran concert, and that’s exactly what I got. I also came away with something to think about. Sheeran made controversial statements, and readers may agree with some of them, disagree with others, or question whether musicians should address these subjects at all. His remarks about Gaza deserve to be examined carefully, including the legal meaning of proportionality and the very different political circumstances in Gaza and the West Bank. Israel’s security concerns are real. The October 7 attack was horrific. Palestinian civilian suffering is also real, and the humanitarian consequences of the war deserve serious examination. None of that provides a simple solution to the conflict. My impression from being at the concert was that Sheeran understands he doesn’t have one. He wanted to explain himself, defend the possibility of open expression, and remind his audience that people who disagree can still find something meaningful to share. I enjoyed the music tremendously, and I appreciated the opportunity to hear his message firsthand rather than relying entirely on someone else’s interpretation of it.
