Federal Charges Land in Minneapolis Antifa Case
Federal prosecutors in Minnesota unsealed an indictment on Tuesday charging 15 defendants tied to two Minneapolis-based Antifa groups, alleging they worked to violently block enforcement of federal immigration law during Operation Metro Surge. According to the government, the case includes conspiracy to impede or injure federal officers and other charges tied to organized resistance against federal personnel and facilities. So yes, once again the people who lecture the rest of us about “democracy” seem to think mobs, masks, and mayhem are the preferred form of civic engagement.
Supporters Swarm the Courthouse
Later that day, supporters of the indicted militants gathered outside the Warren E. Burger federal courthouse in St. Paul and things turned ugly fast. Federal officers used spray and pushed the crowd back when protesters tried to breach the building, turning the area into a tense scene with shouting, pushing, and plain old chaos. One rioter yelled, “F*ck you Fascist Nazis!” which is about as thoughtful as you would expect from a crowd that apparently believes law enforcement is optional when the politics get inconvenient.
DHS Says the Law Will Be Enforced
Homeland Security officials said their investigation found extensive planning, material support, and coordinated attacks against federal personnel and facilities. DHS special agent Michael McCarthy said the agency worked closely with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and made clear that violence or intimidation will be met with decisive action. That is exactly how it should be. If you attack federal officers, interfere with immigration enforcement, or try to storm a courthouse, you should not get a pass because your side wears the “right” T-shirts and chants the right slogans.
