Democrats Turn Memorial Day into a Political Attack on ICE Facility

Memorial Day Becomes a Political Stage

While many Americans spent Memorial Day honoring fallen service members, New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill and Sen. Andy Kim decided the holiday was a fine time to make a splash at Delaney Hall in Newark. The privately run ICE detention center has become the latest target for Democrats who want to turn every enforcement issue into a soapbox moment. Kim said he met with families of detainees and community advocates, and he called for the facility to be shut down immediately. Sherrill also said she was disturbed by reports coming out of the center. That is politics in 2025, where even a detention center can become a photo op if the talking points are hot enough.

Officials Say The Real Problem Is The Mob Outside

The Department of Homeland Security pushed back hard, saying Kim was allowed access for congressional oversight after he personally called Secretary Markwayne Mullin. But DHS had a very different message about Sherrill’s appearance. A spokesperson called her visit a political stunt and said visitation had been suspended because of riots outside the facility. DHS said about 125 agitators surrounded Delaney Hall, many carrying anti-ICE signs and Antifa flags, and that they formed a human chain and blocked entrances and exits. In other words, when chaos broke out, the solution from the left was not law and order, but more outrage, more cameras, and more blaming the people trying to keep order in the first place.

Lawmakers Press For Closure While ICE Defends Conditions

Kim, Sherrill, and Rep. Rob Menendez were denied entry when they arrived on Sunday, but the lawmakers and their allies continued to press the case against Delaney Hall. Critics say detainees face squalid conditions and mistreatment, while groups like the ACLU of New Jersey have called the facility dangerous and cruel. DHS fired back with a detailed defense, saying detainees are given three meals a day, clean water, clothing, bedding, showers, soap, toiletries, phone access, and medical care. The agency even said ICE detention standards are higher than most U.S. prisons holding citizens, which is a hard truth that makes the outrage machine sputter. Of course, that did not stop Democrats from demanding closures and treating enforcement like it is the problem instead of illegal immigration itself.

Past Clashes Still Haunt The Newark Facility

Delaney Hall has been a flash point for months. In May 2025, protesters, including three congressional lawmakers and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, gathered outside the site and clashed with authorities. Officials say some people rushed past security when a gate opened for an ICE bus, and Rep. LaMonica McIver now faces federal charges for allegedly assaulting, resisting, and impeding officers during that incident. That is the kind of scene that follows when politicians decide to blur the line between oversight and confrontation. The public deserves safe streets, secure borders, and detention facilities that actually function, not endless grandstanding from elected officials who seem to think every enforcement action is a campaign ad waiting to happen.
