The camera caught the part Democrats never want voters to see
Democrats love to talk about being the party of the people, but the latest video from a Pennsylvania campaign event shows how much help they sometimes need to pull it off. The footage, reported by Fox News Digital, appears to show Biden-era Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Pennsylvania Democratic candidate Bob Brooks getting coached on how to sound more authentic during a campaign appearance. A staffer can be heard telling them to think about the audience, talk about affordability, and focus on voters who feel left behind. In other words, the usual election-season spell where consultants try to turn polished politicians into folksy neighbors who supposedly just discovered working people exist.
Buttigieg jokes around while the staffer spells out the message
What makes the clip so awkward is that it was supposed to be private help behind the scenes, but it ended up showing exactly the kind of rehearsed theater voters are tired of. The staffer even joked that they were about to have a “really normal conversation” with three cameras pointed at them, and Buttigieg replied, “Everybody act normal,” with a chuckle. He also reportedly had to be reminded of the district number, which is not exactly a confidence boost for anyone hoping for a deep connection with voters. If authenticity needs that much coaching, it is probably already on life support.
Voters can spot the script from a mile away
This is where Democrats keep running into a problem they refuse to admit. People do not want a focus-group machine dressed up as a human being. They want leaders who sound like they mean what they say without needing a staffer in the wings to explain how to look sincere. President Trump has always had an edge here because, agree with him or not, he comes across as himself. Democrats, by contrast, often sound like they are auditioning for a role titled “Average American No. 4.” That may play well inside a campaign bubble, but out in the real world, voters can tell when the performance is fake.
